Use your own domain for ad tags
Point a subdomain at MailAdx so your ad images load from your own domain, not a shared one.
Updated 2026-11-02
By default your ad images load from a domain shared by every publisher. With a custom domain they load from a subdomain of yours, such as ads.yourdomain.com, which ties your newsletter's deliverability to your own reputation.
Before you start
- You need to be able to add DNS records for your domain.
- You need the Owner, Admin or Manager permission.
- This is optional. The standard tag works without it.
Steps
- Open Ad Tags and select Set up my domain.
- Select Add Domain and enter a subdomain, such as
ads.yourdomain.com. Then select Add Domain in the dialog. - Expand the domain's row to see the DNS record to add. It gives the Type, Host / Name, Value / Points to and TTL.
- Add that CNAME record at your domain registrar or DNS provider.
- Wait for the record to spread. This can take 5 to 30 minutes, and up to 24 hours in rare cases.
- Select Verify DNS.
What happens next
The domain moves through these steps. The pill on Ad Tags tells you where it is.
- PENDING: waiting for the DNS check.
- VERIFIED: DNS is correct, and it is waiting for MailAdx to approve it. This step is done by the team.
- ACTIVE: approved. An SSL certificate is then issued and renewed automatically.
- SSL active: the Ad Tags page now reads Tag using: with your domain.
Copy the tag again once Ad Tags shows your domain, and paste it into your template. A tag already in a template keeps the address it was copied with. It keeps working, but it won't move to your domain by itself.
Until the certificate is ready, the Ad Tags page keeps giving you the standard tag, so you can't send a broken one.
If something goes wrong
- FAILED, or "Verification failed". Expand the row to read the reason. Check that the record is a CNAME with the exact value shown. If your DNS provider proxies records, as Cloudflare can, turn that off for this record. Then select Verify DNS again.
- "… is already registered". That domain is already on an account.
- "SSL failed for …". The tag stays on the standard domain. The certificate is retried daily. An admin can retry sooner, so write to support@mailadx.com if it stays failed.
- You want to remove a domain. Write to support@mailadx.com. Replace the tag in your template first.
