Why add MailAdx to Beehiiv?
How to integrate MailAdx with Beehiiv
- 1
Create a free MailAdx publisher account
Sign up at mailadx.com/signup. Account review takes up to 24 hours. No credit card required.
- 2
Set up an ad placement in the Publisher Portal
In the MailAdx Publisher Portal, go to Ad Units and create a new placement. Set your floor CPM, format (banner or native), and any category block rules. Copy the generated ad tag.
- 3
Add the email-hash merge field to your Beehiiv template
In Beehiiv, the subscriber email hash variable is {{subscriber.email_md5}} or use SHA-256 if available in your Beehiiv plan. Add this to your template so MailAdx can use it for frequency capping and targeting.
- 4
Paste the MailAdx ad tag into your Beehiiv template
Copy the ad tag from Dashboard → Ad Units. In your Beehiiv editor, switch to HTML mode and paste the tag where you want the ad to appear. The tag is a standard HTML image wrapped in a link — it works in Beehiiv's drag-and-drop editor via the custom HTML block.
- 5
Send a test email and verify
Send a test send to yourself. Open the email and confirm the ad loads. Check your MailAdx Publisher Portal — you should see one impression. Once verified, you're live.
Beehiiv editor tips
Beehiiv's drag-and-drop editor supports custom HTML blocks — switch to the code view inside a block to paste the MailAdx tag. Place ads after your intro paragraph for highest viewability. Beehiiv's post editor and email editor are separate; make sure you edit the email template, not the web post layout.

Does MailAdx replace Beehiiv's built-in ad network?
MailAdx can replace or supplement Beehiiv's ad network. Many publishers use MailAdx as their primary monetisation layer (direct-sold + programmatic) and either disable Beehiiv's network or keep it as a secondary fill source via OpenRTB.
Can I use MailAdx while keeping my Beehiiv subscription?
Yes. MailAdx is a separate ad serving layer that works alongside your Beehiiv subscription. You don't need to change your ESP or migrate anything.
What Beehiiv email hash format does MailAdx require?
MailAdx accepts SHA-256 hashed email addresses for optimal targeting and frequency capping. MD5 is also supported as a fallback. The merge field format depends on your Beehiiv plan — check Beehiiv's documentation for the correct variable syntax.
How does billing work when I send through Beehiiv?
You pay Beehiiv for email delivery as usual. MailAdx charges only when a subscriber opens and the ad image is requested — not when Beehiiv sends the email. A 10,000-recipient send with a 35% open rate generates roughly 3,500 billable impressions, not 10,000.
Can I use multiple ad placements in one Beehiiv template?
Yes. Create separate ad units in MailAdx (e.g., header, mid-roll, footer) and paste each tag in a different HTML block. Each placement has its own floor CPM and reporting in the Publisher Portal.
Does the Beehiiv integration work on mobile email clients?
Yes. MailAdx serves standard HTML image tags that render in Gmail iOS/Android, Apple Mail, Yahoo, and Outlook mobile. No JavaScript runs inside the inbox — the ad is a plain image request at open time.
Billing with Beehiiv
MailAdx bills publishers a flat platform fee per impression served — typically $0.30–$0.50 CPM — regardless of which ESP you use. Your Beehiiv subscription fee is separate; MailAdx does not charge per send or per subscriber. Advertisers pay you directly (or via programmatic demand) above the platform fee. Top up credits in the Publisher Portal before going live; impressions pause gracefully when credits reach zero.
Troubleshooting Beehiiv + MailAdx
Ad image shows as broken or blank
Confirm the email-hash merge field substitutes in a real Beehiiv test send — not just the editor preview. An empty hash causes MailAdx to skip the auction. Re-send a test to yourself, view the raw HTML source, and verify the eh= parameter is populated.
Impressions not appearing in Publisher Portal
Open the test email in a client that loads remote images (Gmail web, Apple Mail with images enabled). Some corporate Outlook configs block external images by default. Wait 60 seconds and refresh the portal — reporting is near-real-time.
Merge field syntax error in template
Each ESP uses different personalization syntax. Double-check you replaced {{EMAIL_SHA256}} in the MailAdx tag with Beehiiv's exact variable from the setup steps above. A typo in the merge tag will break the URL at open time.
