Check Tag Health

See every ad request from your newsletters, how it ended, and how to fix any problem with your tag.

Updated 2026-11-02

Tag Health shows every ad request from your newsletters and how it ended, so you can tell a problem in your tag from a lack of campaigns.

Before you start

  • You need the Owner, Admin, Manager or Analyst permission.
  • Send a real test email and open it in your mail app. An editor preview doesn't count.

Steps

  1. Open Tag Health. It starts on 7 days.
  2. Choose Today, Yesterday, 7 days or 28 days. Times are in IST.
  3. Read the headline at the top. If it names a problem, it says what to do.
  4. Check the cards: Ad requests, Tag problems, Ads shown and No ad (1×1).
  5. Open Why ads were not shown for each reason, how often it happened and the fix.

What you'll see

The headline is one of these:

  • Your ad tags are set up correctly. Requests without an ad are about demand, not the tag.
  • No ad requests in this period. If you sent a newsletter, check that the tag is in the template.
  • Only previews so far — no opens from readers in this period. Send the newsletter, or a test to yourself, and open it in your mail app.
  • Some requests are for a paused ad unit. Resume the unit if it should serve.
  • A share of requests can't show an ad because of the tag. It turns red above 5% of reader requests, and names the most common cause.

Lower on the page:

  • By ad unit splits the results by slot.
  • Recent problem requests lists up to the last 20 per reason from the last 7 days, with the time, the ad unit, the email hash received and how the email was opened.

Requests from your platform's editor preview or a web copy of the newsletter are shown apart. They are expected and aren't counted as problems.

Owners, admins and managers also get an alert when at least 20% of your reader requests in the last 24 hours fail because of the tag, once there are at least 50 requests in that time. The alert opens Tag Health.

If something goes wrong

  • Email hash missing, not filled, "null", raw or malformed. See Merge tags for your mailing platform.
  • Broken tag URL. A merge tag wasn't filled. Every {{…}} in the tag must be filled at send time.
  • Unknown ad unit. The tag's pk= doesn't match any of your ad units. Re-copy that slot's tag from Ad Tags.
  • Unknown or inactive publisher. Re-copy the tag. If it is correct, your account may not be active yet.
  • Ad unit paused. Resume it in Ad Units.
  • Reader opted out. The reader opted out through AdChoices. There is nothing to fix.
  • No ad available. No campaign was eligible. See No ads are showing.
  • Winning creative has no image. The creative is HTML only. Give it an image.
