Reader location and mailboxes

How to give your direct-sold campaigns a location, choose mailboxes and decide what happens when location is unknown.

Updated 2026-11-02

These settings sit on a line item, so they apply to your own direct-sold campaigns. They decide who sees an ad when you aim it at a place or a mail app.

Before you start

  • Gmail and Yahoo hide where a reader is. MailAdx uses a location from a past click or open, or from your own list, if it has one. Otherwise the location is unknown.
  • You can supply locations yourself. Add country and state columns when you upload subscriber details. Those locations are used only on your own newsletters.

Steps

  1. Open Line Items and edit or create a line item on a direct-sold order.
  2. Under Geo Targeting, choose the places.
  3. Under Mailboxes, untick any you don't want. At least one stays on.
  4. Under When location is unknown, choose one:
    • Don't serve. Only readers who can be placed in your target see this ad. Fewer impressions.
    • Serve anyway. Readers who can't be placed can see it, so some impressions may fall outside your target.
  5. Save the line item.

When location is unknown appears only once a line item has location targeting. Don't serve is the default for a new line item.

What you'll see

After a line item with location targeting delivers, a line under these settings shows how many impressions were placed on the open, how many from an earlier click, open or your list, and how many were unknown.

Mailboxes means the app that opens the email, not the address. A Gmail account read in Apple Mail counts as Apple Mail.

On Inventory Details, Mailboxes is what you report about your list, and Reading app is what was measured from your traffic. Neither one changes who sees an ad.

If something goes wrong

  • "Only Gmail or Yahoo is selected, and both hide location". With Don't serve, that line item reaches only readers already known. Add a mailbox, or choose Serve anyway.
  • The line item delivers less than expected. Check that delivery line. If many readers are unknown, upload locations or choose Serve anyway.
